Day 36- driving and Americana.
Today was due to be another long drive day but first we were stopping in 1880s town to play dress up. Damian had told us about other trips he had taken there where his passengers had created entire story lines and had dressed up as whores and sheriffs and had shoot outs and everything.
It didn’t look like much when we got there because all you could see was the entrance building with a big ‘1880s’ sign on it. We went in and paid for our tickets (you pay to get in’)… Then the woman kindly told us that the costume wasn’t open yet. Thinking it would open later in the day Damian asked ‘when does it open?’. ‘Memorial Day’ was her answer. None of us said much but we were all thinking do we ask for a refund now? But we politely just went on in anyway. Poor Damian must have felt bad.
It was still a cool place and better than just driving but we could see how costumes would have made it better and all the fun that there was to be had. When we all returned to the van Damian said he would take us to a couple of pieces of Americana to make up for the disappointment a bit. We had no idea what it entailed.
The first stop was corn palace. We ate lunch here. The corn palace was a building coated in corn. It was impressive but completely random. The murals are frequently changed.
Next stop was the almighty green giant. We were total tourists and took a group photo under his crotch.
So we arrived in Minnesota, at the KOA. It was another cabin as a reward for the long drive. It was also kind of wet so I guess it was for the best. It was my groups turn to cook so I was ready to do that but Damian came and asked if we didn’t mind getting pizza instead as it was easier. So we went to Pizza Hut. It was alright. Unhealthy and greasy and their garlic bread was just bread with garlic salt but it was ok. We all just migrated to our cabins afterwards which kind of sucked but it happens a lot when we get cabins. The boys even went to sleep earlier than us girls!
I spent the whole night sweating. Dan had been so hot he’d gotten off the bunk bed and slept on the floor instead.
